AltExpo Los Angeles, California 2008

It was a very interesting day and at times memorable.  AltExpo was great and is really getting better every years.

The gist, AltExpo lets manufacturers of alternative energy vehicles demonstrate their technology.  All the usual suspects were there, Pluginamerica.org, ACPropulsion, GM’s Volt also as well as many other start ups and even an incredible air powered Porsche Boxter.

One of us actually got to drive the eBox from ACPropulsion previously covered on this blog as well as the electric Mini from Hybrid technologies.  Both cars were fun to drive.  Even though they conceptually the same, the drove and felt differently.

]If you live in the LA area, Nick will be on CBS talking about his Alfa Romeo Spider conversion.  The clip should be online Monday.

We will post pictures as we go through them later on today.  So check back

Last thoughts, we can talk about electric vehicles, EV all we want, explain them, dissect them but nothing compares to driving them.

AltExpo, Part VI, Miles, Scooters And Trucks

In this part of our coverage of the Los Angeles Alternative Car Expo for 2008, we will look at other attendants.  Tough there were many electric vehicles, EV and different sorts of hybrids, HEV, there were also smaller companies converting HEV to plug-in hybrids, PHEV and utilities.

The gist, we already covered Miles here, and they were at the show with a few vehicles.

Miles in front…

Miles in back.

Miles has low speed vehicles you can drive around town, do your groceries and anything under 35 mph, in a nutshell.  Great idea if you have the space and gentle on the wallet.

The gist, how about converting that 356 Kit into an electric blazing fast roadster?

Say ahhhhh, ah batteries.

Even converted, it is air cooled.  We can’t say much yet about this local startup except that this pretty lil’ thing will be available in January.

The gist, converting your pickup truck to electricity not only makes sense but might even be a good move for those who actually really need them for work.  Jungle Motors not only converts pickup trucks but  Porsches.  We asked them about one of our Alfas.  They said: “Bring it on!  We’ll see.”  Tempting, temping.

Like that green…

The gist, Todd Bank is a man with plan, electric scooters.  Through his Planet LEV companies, he designs and builds electric scooters.  We were impressed with his latest series that are articulated in order to negotiate curves better.  The prices were honest, compared to others we have seen.  Kudos Todd.  You can email him at planet-lev@hotmail.com

The gist, if you don’t want to wait for the electric version of the Smart car, this Chinese based car is reingineered and sold here in the US.  At roughly $18,000 (correct us if we are wrong), it’s slightly bigger than a Smart Car, can go to 60 mph nd seat three.

The gist, though we didn’t have time to take a picture of it, a company offers an electric truck that is over the size of even your biggest pickup trucks.  ElectroRides has the ZeroTruck has a medium duty 2,000-14,500 lb GVWR truck with lithium polymer battery pack and 80-100 mile range depending on payload, with on-board charging system.

What was impressive about this truck is that it is available for around $60,000 and is the first real electric truck, we are assuming we should call it an ET, available.

Last part of the coverage next.
