We were wondering when the tire veteran Michelin would come out with a dedicated electric vehicle tire. They are unveiling a prototype.
The gist is that current tire technology is based on the internal combustion engine, ICE technology. The torque is much lower on an ICE engine platform than on an electricdrive. A tire that would successfully propel an EV would have to be designed from the grounds up. It seems veteran tire maker Michelin has one.
Michelin EV. The Michelin EV is a tire specifically designed for EVs. It is thinner than most ICE tires but delivers a smoother and quite ride, as well as offers a very low resistance roll. It has a long diameter and is relatively narrowhelps reduce electricity
consumption, because the tire turns fewer times when covering a given distance.
Consequently, there is less deformation and heating, resulting in additional energy savings. That is the philosophy behind it. Michelin says it also offers safety, and knowing the maker, we do not doubt it.
Not Active Wheel. This wheel is different form the Active Wheel Michelin has already shown the world a while back. The Active Wheel has an electric motor within the hub.
We feel Michelin will surprise us yet again with an airless tire. No air to be inflated, or deflated, constant torque, this tire is the way to go for the future.
