Converting Oldies Into Newies, From Gas To Electricity For Classics

To the touchy topic of converting classics into electric, we say, yes, but only a few…

The gist is let us face it.  No matter how much we abhor the consequences of internal combustion engine, ICE technology and its repercussion on the global peace and health, some classics should be left untouched.  We scarcely would recommend turning a Ferrari 250 GTO to electricity.  Yet for some old cars, converting to electricity is not an act of crime but common sense and is even seen as a revitalizing project.

From Gas To Electricity, Revitalizing An Oldie.  While conversions are a plenty, turning a classic into an electric vehicles, EV can be a frowned upon subject.  However, for some cars, it makes sense.  Classics or oldies that are worth more to restore and maintain than to buy can make for perfect EV conversion projects.  We think here particularly VW Beetles, rubber nose MGs and a slew of other cars that are affordable and easy to work on.

Conversion Shops.  Conversion shops can be found almost anywhere but not all will work with whatever you throw at them.  According to WesternFrontLine, conversion shop Mac and Mac will convert a Beetle for as little as $10,000 to do a basic conversion for a month’s worth of work.  Motors Jungle is based in the Los Angeles area and also works on Porsches.

While the possibilities are endless, much research needs to be done.  First, you need a healthy donor.  Then find a reputable conversion shop.  In our research, we also found local specialized car mechanics that were eager to work on electrification projects.  Anyway you look at it, driving for 3 to 6 cents a mile for an EV is 13 to 15 for a hybrids and over 20 for a regular gas car.
