Dylan was hard press by stories leaked into the wild that the lab he worked for, United Technologies had devised a way to tap into energy from a vacuum…
Getting out to grab a bite to eat was hard to do these days. Dylan had to sneak out the door and even then, his face was all to well known and reporters hounded him. It was a safer bet to eat at the cafeteria than risk being seen outside. And for what? A fairly recent test had shown a way to extract energy from a vacuum tube. Even though the energy was unsustainable, it didn’t stop it from inflaming the minds of busy reporters and journalists.
The idea was simple, at least in theory. A little bit of quantum physics would teach you that there is plenty of energy to be found in a perfect vacuum. Even in space, where the idea of a pure vacuum doesn’t exist, at least around our system is full of energy, and at the very least, potential energy. The trick was harvesting it and after that either storing it or using directly. That was altogether another story.
The best part about this research was that in theory, a small device held in your hand could power an entire house, and with a little more development, an entire block or city. But it was still too early to tell. Even though quantum science had made leaps and bounds in the past decades, there are things that just take time to understand and develop.
