We have often talked about hybrid battery technology as potentially being the solution for the electric drive in general.
The gist is that hybrid batteries solve many problems, and in some cases with running prototypes back it up, such as the AFS Trinity, XH-150. We have made the arguments before here, adding ultracapacitors to regular batteries for electric vehicles, EV enhances the performance and increases battery life-cycle.
The Cure For Battery Exhaustion. If you want regular batteries to run longer you have a few choices. You can opt to not use them, but that is not very practical especially when it comes to driving EVs. You can choose to not use them very often but both are equally not interesting. So what do you do? You add another battery that works under specific stress loads and relieves the regular battery.
Ultracapacitors to The rescue. Let’s see if we can recap everything so far. Regular EV batteries are only good for so many cycles of charge and depletion. What could we do to improve on this? Put more batteries? That won’t work as the excess weight negatively impact the range of an EV. More to the point, how can we make batteries handle short burst of energy when needed and recharge as quickly? Adding ultracapacitors to a regular battery pack, with a well thought of system that balances the load between both will help the life cycle of the regular batteries, while increase the overall performance.
The sooner we start working on integrating both technologies, the sooner we will have EVs that will rival the internal combustion engine counterparts, the sooner they will take us farther.
