We expect always a little more from the makers of the 350, now the 370 and the amazing GT-R. However, we didn’t know what their hybrid, HEV version of the Altima would be like.
The gist is that the car impressed us in different ways. If the technology comes from Toyota, it is decidedly a Nissan. The first impressions are of correct ergonomic, stylish but not over the board design and quiet. The drive is the best part. It handles very well and corners flat without being uncomfortable. It’s a car that makes you feel in control and safe.
The Pros And Cons. The pros of the Altima HEV are by far the handling, which gives it character. To start it you insert the key under the dashboard and turn your eyes to a On and Off knob to the right of the steering wheel. You push and nothing happens. It’s blissful quietness which lasts a few miles per hour until the engine kicks in very smoothly.
The cons, would be mild in the sense that we would love to see a plug-in hybrid, PHEV version of it. The truck space is smaller than the regular version due to its battery pack in the back.
Technically speaking, using Nissan’s 2.5L 198hp mated to a 30 KW NiMH battery pack pushing the 40 hp electric engine, we liked its “ECO MODE” displaying when you are on electric mode only that makes you feel less guilty about driving. The warranty is good for 15 years or 150,000 on emission control equipment. None of the technicians had to replace a battery pack in 2 years. The regenerative braking was so smooth, we barely noticed it.
Final thoughts, Nissan already had a nice car with its base Altima and the HEV version is a less-guilty ride. The car handles very well, is comfortable and should appeal to people wanting a little more character. It seems the Maxima is the same in terms of character and performance, the only difference being with price and styling.
