The future of the grid needs to be upgraded in order to support electric vehicles, EVs and plug-in hybrids, PHEVs of any sorts.
The gist is that electric grids throughout the world haven't developed much and have been left to age, only adding bits and pieces here and there. However, with the upcoming onslaught of electric drive vehicles that will pull on their resource, serious and thoughtful upgrading need to happen in order to revamp their aging infrastructure.
The Electric Grid Getting Smart. Technologies, such as V2G that allow EVs and PHEVs to sell back excess electricity to utilities has potentially alleviated the concerns over burdening the current state of the grid, but more work needs to be done.
The New U.S. Energy Policy. With the new administration's energy policy, the department of energy, DOE has introduced their version of a smart grid. Some of the solutions include burying lines and let home owners know about how efficient their usage is, according to MTExpress.
The numbers, about $400 billion over 10 years that would potentially save between $46 billion and $117 billion over the next 20 years, according to the DOE. A more efficient grid also means relying less on petroleum and coal. However, the biggest hurdle is educating consumers to be efficient.
Alternative Energy's Role In A Smart Grid. Alternative will also play a big role as the grid would allow for residential solar panels, small wind turbines, and PHEVs to act as power sources, or in the case of EVs and PHEVs, sub-stations.
