Can’t Wait For The Volt, Try A Malibu

Can’t wait for the Volt, extended range electric vehicle, EREV/plug-in hybrid, PHEV to come out?  How about the 2009 Malibu Hybrid in the meantime?

The gist, OK, it’s no Volt but it’s here and ready to go.  Yes, it’s no PHEV but it might be enough to get you going until the Volt finally appears, if and when it does.

With an estimated EPA fuel economy of 26 for city driving and 34 on the highway, the Chevy Malibu Hybrid 2009 offers a good alternative, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

So Why No Hoopla? When the Sentinel asks: “it’s a little surprising that Chevrolet hasn’t made more of the fact that the Malibu has a gasoline-electric hybrid version.”  the reason is really the same old story, manufacturer don’t make as much profit from HEVs as regular models.  Shocking after hearing all the swearing Detroit is serious about HEVs?  Not that much.

What The Malibu HEV Is And Isn’t.  It’s not your top of the line HEV with 5 speed automatic full HEV system.  Instead, it is a simple HEV, i.e. no electric drive only and only has a 4 speed automatic gear box.  Still, it’s sufficient for the decent fuel efficient it achieves.

At a base price of around $25,000, it will satisfy many consumers who only buy American.  And why not?  It does pave the way for more sophisticated HEV, and hopefully soon to be released extended range electric vehicle, EREV / plug-in hybrids, PHEV (what a mouth full!) Volt.
