The other fully electric vehicle, EV everyone expected at the LA Auto Show was the Mitsubishi iMIEV and the new hybrid, HEV Honda’s Insight.
The Mitsubishi iMIEV was covered here before and in its definite version, looks very Japanese in its design. In fact, it has a Mangaesque look and feel to it.
The front is inviting and the overall proportion of the EV is perfect for a city dweller.
The back is pleasing also,
and the ergonomics look good inside. It seems the electric car was well thought out for city trips and mild suburban use.
Technically speaking, the range is estimated at below 100 miles and an optimistic top speed of 112mph, to be confirmed. It uses a lithium ion battery pack with 74 kW of power and in “eco mode” 18 kW will be freed to boost its range by10%. Charging with a 110 volts socket will take 14 hours and of course, half with 220 volts. The impressive numbers are that with a 220 volt SYSTEM, you will be able to charge 80% in 35 minutes, using Mistubishi’s proprietary quick charge method.
What about the Honda Insight? Much has been said about the new and improved Insight which, really does not look like the older insight.
Technically speaking, it will be a simple parallele hybrid, HEV where both the gas and the electric engine propel the car. The Insight’s forte will be a lower price at an estimated $18,000, a whole $5,000 to 7,000 cheaper than a Toyota Prius. Killer Toyota Prius, anyone?
The lines are pleasing, clean and slightly reminiscent of the Prius, especially in the back. There is little left of the original Insight.
It’s clean and modern looking.
That’s it for those two duking it out. Next, Ford and more.
