An unlikely candidate in the electric vehicle, EV field is Chrysler, whom we mentioned before here.
The gist, after some rumors back then of a pretty sexy EV prototype,
Chrysler did unveil this week three EVs and plug-in hybrids, PHEVs for 2010, thus bypassing GM and Toyota. Astonishing considering Chrysler had some of the less fuel efficient vehicles a few years ago.
And the final product is not bad either, proving you can have pretty prototypes and the end result doesn’t have to be so watered down.
This would actually be a nice addition in ElectricNick garages.
What does it mean for consumers? Chrysler will have hybrids, HEVs and plug-in hybrids, PHEVs but mostly it has set the bar high with its EVs. It sends a very clear message that they are here to stay and have a clear vision for the future.
The numbers and claims. According to CNN Money, there will be an all-electric-powered Dodge sports car, picture above and a HEV Town & Country minivan with a Jeep Wrangler, with driving ranges between 200 and 400 miles, according to Chrysler Chief Executive Bob Nardelli. We assume 200 miles is for the EV and 400 for the HEVs. The EVs use lithium-ion battery pack made by A123 Systems Inc., and the Dodge can be charged with an electric plug in 8 hours. The body was designed by Lotus and has a 268 hp electric engine, that will do 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds, with a top speed more than 120 mph and a range of 150 to 200 miles. Sold! Wait, how much?
The Jeep EV is a PHEV Jeep! It can go about 400 miles, 40 in electric mode and the EV minivan also has the same numbers.
Also noteworthy, it is involved in a joint project with General Electric Co. and the Department of Energy to develop smaller battery packs for electric vehicles. Considering GE is also partnering with Google to promote EVs and alternative energy, this could make for an interesting group.
History and insight. Little was known until now but Chrysler’s EV foray began before Cerberus’ 80.1% stake and development was done separately from former partner Daimler. Chrysler held partnership talks with Tesla Motors Inc. but the discussions broke off last year.
Incredible Chrysler! You surely fooled a few people. Remember what we said before, underdogs and left fielders can surprise you at times. Who would have thought?
