Alternative Energy Thinks Outside The Box

The alternative energy sector has benefited the most from soaring oil price which is good news for electric vehicles, EV.

Our friends over at EcoGeek and Seeking Alpha have been a wealth of information source when it comes to alternative energy technology and investing news.  The latest is again about wind energy.

The gist, this post gives us a snapshot of what is happening with the wind, the largest wind farm, a 735 MW capacity farm called Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center, TX to be eventually eclipsed by the Pickens’s Texas Project (2014) that will generate 4 GW, with the UK’s offshore plan with its London Array project for 1 GW.  Back in the U.S., Bluewater Wind’s project is planned for 450 MW and grow to 600 MW.  While Scotland is working on its Clyde wind farm good for 548MW.  But the winner is,South Dakota with its Titan Wind Project, that is until China starts its 100 GW in 2020.

So far we’ve looked at wind energy, as mentioned above and even solar as main contender in tomorrow’s clean electricity providers.  Are you ready for something that truly comes from the think-outside-the-box department?  How about capturing foot step to generate electricity?

This post really impressed us the most as it show how creative we can be as a race.  We are right up the Star Trek alley here.

The gist, Elizabeth Redmond, 23 invented the POWERleap that captures footstep energy on tiles, converts it to electricity.  According to her, bodies can generate 100 watts electricity at rest, enough to power a computer.  Couple that with clothes that generate electricity with movement and again, we have a nice integrative solution.

As usual, one technology alone won’t solve all our problems but many together will.
